Dearest Readers,
While I was parusing through Chapters this morning I came across a new groupie book in the music section. ’Lets Spend the Night together – backstage secrets of supergroupies’ . What was it about groupies? How did they represent an era? Perhaps the idea of Groupies is something lost with the hippie culture in the 1970′s. Something foreign to our culture today erased with the rise of STDs and conservative ideals. But there is still an appeal; an excitement that embraces the phenomena of the sexy groupie girls that were so prevalent of the past rock n’ roll scene. One of the most famous groupies ‘pamela des barres’ has published numerous books on her adventures. Making her incredibly famous.
After reading on her website; which notes: “she is the spokeschick for the most sexually liberating generation of female in history. She rocked-out with The Doors, Love , Steppenwolf, Frank Zappa, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page and Keith Moon – the gorgeous men who made the music. Whether in awe – or in love, she explored each relationship with unjaded adoration and an innocent sexual openness few could resist. She set the standard for sexual honesty in women’s writing.”
In a time when it was wrong for women to talk about sex and therefore converse on sexual topics. Groupie offered an alternative. Making woman sexuality rather admirable and liberating than something that is supposed to be discussed only behind closed doors.
Rock n’ Roll back than was something that was the popular brand of music for the masses. Sprung in a time of new found rebellion from political repression; young people found a common voice through rock n’ roll. The quality and historical implications has brought its classic sounds to audiences for generations to come.
Final thought: With the globalization of the world music has become increasingly specialized. With millions of sounds available and only many more coming in to the music scene everyday. Nostagia for the Rock n Roll of our past has caused Groupies such as Pamella De Barres to become famous once again.
Kindest Thoughts,
Barb E
